How to Insert Flash into an Article in Joomla 1.6

25 Apr 2011

I just started using Joomla 1.6 a week ago and I love the enhancements in the administrator backend. There was one problem though – inserting flash into an article was really killing me. TinyMCE kept on messing up my code after I saved the article.

I tried many different settings but still somehow I can’t seem to successfully display that damn flash object in a Joomla article. I finally found the solution which was just a click away, but annoyingly so difficult to find.

Ok, so here’s how you insert media (Flash, Quicktime, Shockwave, etc) into an article in Joomla 1.6. I assume a fresh installation of Joomla 1.6, so I’m gonna be thorough on the steps.

  1. Login to your administrator backend
  2. Go to Extensions > Plug-in Manager > Editor – TinyMCE
  3. Under the Basic Options panel on the right hand side, click the Functionality drop down list and select Extended. Now click Save & Close.
  4. Now log in to your site’s FTP and create a folder called ‘flash‘ in the root.
  5. Upload an SWF file into the flash folder.
  6. Test whether your flash movie plays in this URL – If it does, excellent. You’re almost done.
  7. Now back to the Joomla administrator backend and go to Content > Article Manager > Options (on the top right).
  8. Under the Text Filters tab, change all Filter Type values to No Filtering and then click Save & Close. This was the step that took me so long to figure out.
  9. Now you should be in the Article Manager: Articles page. Click New to create a new article (or select an article you have already created).
  10. Click the Insert/edit embedded media icon in the TinyMCE editor to bring out the modal box.
  11. Under File/URL, enter the URL you used in step 6 ( Enter the respective dimensions and click Insert. You should see a yellow box in the TinyMCE editor.
  12. Now save your article and view it in the front end. Your flash movie should now be playing.

Good luck!

@Azhar Kamar, Hi, I have the same problem than Adi, that image appears, and I have followed all steps. I disabled the Tinymce editor, and could add the code into the article. After saving and closing, I activated the plugin again. That’s the only way I found. Do you know why that image is appearing instead of the flash?

    Thanks for the post.

    ghohun replied:

    @ghohun, Sorry, was @Erik, not @Adi. LOL

@maideen, no problem. I’m glad this tutorial helped you.

Upload slide show? What exactly do you mean? If you’re talking about rotating image banners, there should be quite a few modules and components available for that function.

Mr.Azhar. yes your right, rotating image banner. I am still trying this or is it possible load flash in banner?

If so, Please let me know how can do.
