Earlier today, I utilized a very useful software, Recuva, that can recover deleted files from your computer and even from external media like digital camera memory cards or MP3 players. That was the first time I used such a program and I must say I’m quite impressed.

You can download it for free from CNet – http://download.cnet.com/Recuva/3000-2242_4-10753287.html

Alright this was the scenario. My sister accidentally deleted all my university convocation photos from her Nikon D40 Micro SD card while it was inserted in her laptop. So I either had to murder her or find a solution to this problem. I decided to go with the latter. Files that are deleted from external media while plugged in to a computer do not go to the Recycle Bin, so I thought I had no hope of getting those photos back.

So I did a Google search and in a matter of seconds, I found Recuva.

“Recuva (pronounced “recover”) is a freeware Windows utility to restore files that have been accidentally deleted from your computer. This includes files emptied from the Recycle bin as well as images and other files that have been deleted by user error from digital camera memory cards or MP3 players. It will even bring back files that have been deleted by bugs, crashes and viruses.”

Recuva found all my photos (although a few were broken) in just a few seconds. I just had to select which drive I want Recuva to dig in (in my case the Micro SD drive), click scan, and all the deleted files were retrieved.

So if you ever delete files from your digital camera or any external media and want to recover them, don’t worry, Recuva is here.
